Model & Serial Number Location. The model serial number of a John Deere zero turn is printed on an ID tag located under the seat. You must lift the seat up to view the ID tag. The serial number (PIN) is 13 or 17 digits long. Find your John Deere - Aftermarket zero turn parts. Where is the serial number on a John Deere 4230 located? Check on the back of the tractor above the PTO (power take off) and there should be a small plate on the cast main case that says.

Be sure you're getting the tractor serial number not the one off the engine

JOHN DEERE 650 TRACTOR

It looks to me like ser. nos. ending with 1000 thru 3538 should be first year for that model; 1981.

  1. I tried a serial number search and that is not a valid serial number. Check it again and make sure. That TY on the front is more like a Deere part number, but it's too long to be a part. Let me know and I'll get the year model and everything for you.
  2. Find The Product ID On Your Equipment. As seen in the example, the model number will be displayed below the MODEL heading (Example: Z235), and the serial number will be underlined on the top-right corner of the tag (Example: 130002). If you're looking for the engine number, that can be found directly on the engine itself.

You may be surprised to learn that not all John Deere lawn tractors sport traditional green and yellow. In 1969, John Deere produced lawn tractors with customized hoods and seats in four colors: red, orange, yellow and blue. The entire tractor, other than the hood and seat, was painted white. By 1971, John Deere ceased making colored lawn tractors due to a lack of sales. Pinpointing the age of a vintage John Deere lawn tractor is as simple as checking its color. For traditional green and yellow tractors, determining their age takes a little investigating.

  1. Stand behind your John Deere lawn tractor and look to the bottom left hand corner near the left tire to locate the identification tag. This metal plate attached to the frame of the mower provides you with the tractor’s model and serial number. Tags may be located under the hood or along the front on older models.

  2. Write down your lawn tractor’s model and serial number, because both provide information needed to determine the age of your lawn tractor. Model numbers range from two to four digits, while serial numbers range from six to 11 digits with a two-letter prefix, depending on the age of your lawn tractor.

  3. Visit the John Deere website and download the appropriate pdf file for the expected year of your lawn tractor. Each list contains one decade of lawn tractors.

  4. Search for the model number in the first column labeled “Model” on the left hand side of the chart. Model numbers appear in numerical order from lowest to highest. If your model number is not listed, explore other lists until you find your model number listed.

  5. Locate your serial number in the third column labeled “serial number breaks.” This lists a range of serial numbers. If your serial number falls on or between the two serial numbers listed, you are in the right box.

  6. Look to the column to the left to determine the manufacture date of your lawn tractor.

  7. Tip

Place a sheet of paper over worn identification tags and rub with a pencil with soft lead to take an impression of the numbers.

    Warning

Other parts of the mower may also have identification or parts numbers. Always check that numbers you record are model and serial numbers. The identification tag is metal and screwed to the mower.
